How lenses work+
The science How lenses work

Every prescription is physics.

Plus lenses converge light. Minus lenses diverge it. The power on your prescription is 1/ƒ — and a partner-store optician turns it into the right lens.

Convex Plus lens

Diagram: parallel light refracts through a convex lens and converges at the focal point; lens power in dioptres equals 1 divided by focal length.

Concave Minus lens

Diagram: parallel light refracts through a concave (minus) lens and diverges after passing through it. The diverging rays' dashed backward extensions meet at a virtual focal point on the incoming side. Concave lenses have minus power and correct myopia (nearsightedness).
